In the last couple of decades a major shift has been happening in transportation. Cars were the king of the road, however we can now see a growing trend in the popularity of cycling as a main method of transport. Perhaps the trend can be put down to 'green' thinking, or maybe just the prices of gas are starting to get to people. Either way there are now more bikes on the road then ever before. Maybe you have considered buying a bike? If you have been thinking about using a bike as your main mode of transportation, or just thinking about getting one for fun, there are a few things you need to think about.
You must make sure you get a bike that is the appropriate size for you. To do this, you will need to measure your inseam. Simply measure the distance from your groin to the bottom of your foot, down the inside of your leg. When you get a bike you should be able to lay both feet flat to the ground if need be. This means that you will be able to stop your bicycle with your feet if the brakes do not work—without having to tilt the bicycle and risk doing harm to it and to yourself.
Be cautious, however, and always be sure to test the bike out before you buy it. Don't just jump on and jump off though, take a nice little ride for at least a few minutes. It's the same concept as buying a used car, there's no way you would take it without testing it.
So you should use this same frame of mind when buying your bike. This is especially important if you are going to be spending large sums of money for a bicycle that you are going to be riding a lot. Choose the bicycle that you know will fit you. You should have no problem finding one that you can ride easily, but you also need to find a bike that fits your riding style. Why would you spend money on something that does not feel comfortable to ride?
Another thing to keep in mind is purchasing safety gear. There have been many advancements on bicycle helmets since they first were introduced. They are now designed to offer better protection while looking a bit better, as well. You should never even think about riding the bike without first putting on your helmet. You don't even realize how important this thing can be in saving your life.
It wouldn't hurt to also grab some elbow and knee guards, as well as ankle and wrist guards, just in look at here case you decide to take your bike off the road. Pants clips are another great investment, especially if you are using your bike as your sole means of transportation. These clips are designed to keep your pants from getting caught up in the gears and the chain.
Your main priority is the physical fit of your bike. This is the most important thing to consider when looking into using a bike to get around. Comfort and safety are both very important.
